Poll result
10 Jul 2007 - JG
The usually decisive Picking Losers readers have been split by last week's poll. Rather aptly really, given the fault lines running through the Tory party. Maybe this is just their problem - there are just too many different types of Tory now. Maybe bgprior's idea that the Tory party should split is the only solution. Read the entry again if you get a chance - the option was simplified for the purposes of the poll, hence it may not have scored as highly as it might.
The most favourable answer on the poll (33%) was to adopt more traditional Tory policies. I fear this is the least likely of all the options right now however. The only party allowed to look like it is adopting left of centre policies at the moment is the Labour party, such is the confused mess of the political game at the moment. A worrying 26% of you felt the game was up for the Tories and that there was no saving them. Another crushing election defeat and it may well be - at least for some time anyhow. 24% of you felt that their struggle to centre ground was their only hope. I do sympathise with those who chose this option, but I have to say it is my least desirable. As I have said before, the best the Tories can hope out of this strategy is the Labour party losing mass support at the polls because of personality issues associated with Brown or a collapse of the economy. It is no good for politics and no good for those who actually want choice at the election. It may well be their only hope, however.
